Before there were nickel-operated doors, there was coffee.
It Started With
a Cup of Coffee
Horn & Hardart opened its first small Philadelphia restaurant in 1888.
Coffee was part of the story from the very beginning. Frank Hardart brought with him a knowledge of New Orleans coffee traditions and a smoother approach to brewing than many Americans were accustomed to at the time.
The partnership between Joseph Horn and Frank Hardart would eventually create something much larger than a neighborhood lunchroom, but the cup of coffee remained central to what followed.

In 1902, Horn & Hardart opened an Automat on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia, bringing a new style of quick, affordable dining to America.

The service was fast, but the dining room still offered marble, brass, tile and a sense of occasion.

The little glass food doors may have been the Automat's most famous feature, but the coffee counter had a memorable detail of its own.
Horn & Hardart coffee was famously served from ornate dolphin-head spouts, turning something as ordinary as a cup of coffee into part of the Automat experience.

The Automat Stayed
in the Light
By the time national Prohibition began, Horn & Hardart's Automat was already part of American city life.
While cocktails moved behind hidden doors, coffee never had to. The Automat offered another kind of gathering place—bright, public, affordable and open to a broad cross-section of the city.
People could meet over coffee, lunch or pie without passwords, secret knocks or a hidden room.
A Second Act
The Automat Closed.
The Story Didn't.
The physical Automat eventually disappeared, but the memories attached to Horn & Hardart never quite did. When the name returned, coffee once again became the natural place to begin.
