A Story Box Collection
Vanilla may be one of the world’s most familiar flavors, but it does not taste the same everywhere it grows. Climate, soil, orchid variety and local curing traditions give beans from different regions their own aromas and personalities.
The Vanilla Trade Routes Collection invites them to explore that difference through six 4-ounce bottles of Cook’s single-origin pure vanilla extract.
Their journey can begin in Mexico, the ancestral home of the vanilla orchid, then travel through Madagascar and Uganda, across the islands of Indonesia and into the floral vanilla regions of the South Pacific.
Some origins are creamy and classic. Others are floral, fruity, earthy, smoky or unexpectedly bold. Used side by side, they reveal that vanilla is not simply an ingredient—it is a flavor shaped by place.
Each extract completes its journey in Paso Robles, California, where Cook Flavoring Company transforms carefully sourced beans into pure vanilla using the knowledge accumulated by four generations of one American family.
This is more than a collection for the baking cabinet. It is a tasting journey through the landscapes, traditions and people behind one of the world’s most treasured flavors.

What’s Inside
Choose six 4-ounce Cook’s single-origin pure vanilla extracts from a collection spanning Mexico, Africa, Southeast Asia and the South Pacific.
Meet the Maker
Six growing regions share one family legacy—more than a century spent studying vanilla, developing extracts and preserving the character that makes each origin different.
Paso Robles, California
The Cook story began in 1918, when Angus T. Lochhead founded a flavoring company devoted to producing superior extracts for America’s growing baking and ice cream industries.
Angus’s son Raymond combined the family’s practical experience with training in chemical engineering and aromatic chemistry. His work expanded Cook’s understanding of extraction, flavor formulation and the natural compounds that give different ingredients their character.
Today, Josephine Lochhead and her family carry Cook’s into its fourth generation. From its California facility, the company works with vanilla beans sourced from growing regions around the world and turns them into extracts that preserve their distinctive regional qualities.
We chose Cook’s because the company treats vanilla as more than a universal background flavor. Its single-origin collection allows the baker to experience how geography, agriculture and craftsmanship can change something they thought they already knew.
Behind the Bean
The vanilla orchid originated in Mexico, where its cultivation was developed long before the flavor traveled abroad. Once growers learned how to pollinate the orchid by hand, vanilla cultivation spread to tropical regions across Africa, Southeast Asia and the Pacific.
Every destination added something new. Different orchid varieties, climates and curing traditions produced beans that could be creamy, floral, fruity, woody, smoky or deeply aromatic.
This collection follows that continuing journey—bringing six growing regions together in one American flavor cabinet and inviting the recipient to discover just how many stories can exist inside the word “vanilla.”
