Unique Snacks
Pennsylvania Dutch pretzel tradition, deep sourdough flavor, and the kind of crunch that comes from doing things a little differently.
Unique Snacks is a sixth-generation, family-owned pretzel bakery in Reading, Pennsylvania. Its newest creation, Knead ’Ems, takes the family’s century-old sourdough recipe and turns it into a smaller, snack-by-the-handful pretzel.
A century-old Pennsylvania pretzel company still asking what a pretzel could be.
Reading’s Pretzel Tradition
The Unique name becomes part of a family pretzel business already rooted in Pennsylvania baking tradition.
Six Generations of Asking, “What If?”
Unique Snacks describes itself as a sixth-generation, family-owned and operated pretzel bakery based in Reading, Pennsylvania.
The Spannuth family traces its American pretzel-making tradition back to the late nineteenth century, while the Unique brand celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2021.
Through the years, the company has built its identity around pretzels that are intentionally a little less uniform: slow-baked dough, deep sourdough flavor, unusual shapes, and the cracks, splits, and hollow spaces that make the texture interesting.
Today, the bakery continues that tradition from Reading— a Pennsylvania city long associated with hard pretzels— while introducing new forms such as Knead ’Ems.
The Spannuth family carries a Pennsylvania pretzel-baking tradition across generations.
The company marks 1921 as the beginning of the Unique name as an official pretzel brand.
Unique Pretzel Bakery is named Snack Producer of the Year by an industry publication.
Knead ’Ems bring the family sourdough recipe to the mini-pretzel aisle.
A History With a Wink
Unique Does Not Tell Its Story Like Everybody Else.
The company’s official timeline mixes real milestones with deliberately exaggerated family folklore.
That is part of the brand’s personality. Unique tells stories about pretzel diplomacy, famous historical figures, accidental inventions, and family dares with a very obvious wink.
Underneath the jokes is the part that matters: a real Pennsylvania family bakery, six generations of pretzel making, and a company that has continued finding new ways to make a familiar snack feel different.
For Gift With a Story, that playful distinction is worth preserving. We can enjoy the folklore without pretending every punchline in the company timeline belongs in a history textbook.
The family history is real. The timeline has a sense of humor. The pretzel crunch speaks for itself.
The Unique way of telling a storyPretzel City
Reading Is Part of the Recipe.
Unique does not simply make pretzels in Pennsylvania. It makes them in Reading.
The city has long been associated with hard pretzel baking, and Unique embraces that identity directly.
Its bakery and retail store remain in Reading, where customers can buy the company’s pretzels, gift baskets, chocolate-covered products, and dips.
That sense of place gives the product something we value: the pretzel is not just a national snack. It is connected to one of Pennsylvania’s best-known pretzel communities.
Some foods belong to a place. Hard pretzels and Reading, Pennsylvania, have been keeping each other company for generations.
A hometown snack storyImperfect Pretzel Perfection
Slow-Baked, Sourdough, and Meant to Have Character.
Unique’s best-known pretzels are built around texture: deep cracks, open surfaces, hollow spaces, and a serious crunch.
Sourdough at the Center
Unique bases its pretzel line on a secret family recipe that has been carried forward across generations.
Slow-Baked
The company emphasizes an unhurried baking process designed to build flavor and crunch.
Not Perfectly Uniform
Splits, shells, rings, and minis each use shape and exposed surface area to create a different eating experience.
Fewer Ingredients
Unique repeatedly returns to a simple idea: less unnecessary complexity and more flavor from the pretzel itself.
Selected for a Reason
Why We Chose Unique Snacks.
We already love Pennsylvania pretzel stories. Unique gives us a very different chapter.
Martin’s Handmade Pretzels tells a story about hand-twisting and an old-fashioned hard pretzel tradition. Unique tells a story about a Reading family bakery that keeps experimenting with shape, texture, and crunch.
That difference matters. Knead ’Ems are immediately familiar—they are mini pretzels— but they carry a deeper sourdough flavor and a family-company story that keeps them from feeling like filler inside a gift box.
They also work almost anywhere: college care packages, snack boxes, soda gifts, game-day assortments, movie nights, and simple “thinking of you” gifts.
Familiar enough to eat by the handful. Different enough to deserve a story card.

Why the Smaller Shape Works
Snack by the Handful

The smaller format makes Knead ’Ems easy to add to a care package or casual snack gift without asking the recipient to wrestle with a giant hard pretzel.
Why We’re Starting Here
Old Recipe. New Shape.
1921 Heritage · 2025 Product
Knead ’Ems are a particularly good introduction to Unique because they connect the company’s old family recipe with one of its newest ideas.
New in 2025
The Century-Old Recipe Got Smaller.
Knead ’Ems were introduced in March 2025 as Unique’s answer to the mini-pretzel category.
The company’s idea was not simply to shrink an ordinary pretzel. It wanted the mini format to retain the bold crunch and sourdough flavor people associate with the rest of its line.
Unique describes Knead ’Ems as being made from its 100-year-old family recipe and positioned them as a higher-quality, more flavorful take on a very familiar snack.
That combination is exactly why we like them: a new product whose story only makes sense because of the much older bakery behind it.
A mini pretzel launched in 2025 with a family recipe already a century old.

Old Tradition · New Product
PAA Pennsylvania Pretzel Story Still Being Written.
Unique’s family baking history reaches back generations, but Knead ’Ems themselves are thoroughly modern.
That contrast is useful. Not every Gift With a Story product needs to come from an unchanged nineteenth-century recipe or antique package.
Sometimes the more interesting story is what happens when an established family maker keeps experimenting— using an old recipe as the starting point for a new snack.
Knead ’Ems let us tell both stories at once: Pennsylvania pretzel heritage and a product launched in 2025.
