In 1912, Howell Campbell Sr. and plant supervisor Porter Moore were working at Standard Candy Company in Nashville, Tennessee.
Their creation brought together milk chocolate, caramel, marshmallow nougat and freshly roasted peanuts in one round, wonderfully unconventional piece of candy.
That combination was the important part. At a time when candy bars generally centered on a single principal element, Goo Goo combined several different textures and flavors in one confection.
The result became known as America's first combination candy bar—and one of Nashville's most enduring edible traditions.

What's in a Name?
Why “Goo Goo”?
The story has nothing to do with the Grand Ole Opry.
According to the company's history, Howell Campbell was riding a Nashville streetcar and talking with fellow passengers about the new candy he had created.
He still needed a name. During the conversation, a school teacher asked about Campbell's infant son. He mentioned that the baby's first words had been “goo goo.”
The teacher suggested he use those words for the candy—and the unusual name stuck.

Prohibition Even Began
When national Prohibition arrived in 1920, Goo Goo Cluster had already been a Nashville candy for eight years.
While cocktails disappeared behind hidden doors, America's appetite for candy certainly did not. Chocolate shops, soda fountains, lunch counters and neighborhood stores continued offering plenty of perfectly legal indulgence.
And in Nashville, Goo Goo Cluster had already created a combination worth remembering.
