Small-Batch Craft Jerky · West Chester, Pennsylvania · Since 2012
Righteous Felon Craft Jerky
Pennsylvania-smoked beef jerky, American-sourced Black Angus, and an outlaw sense of humor that refuses to make the snack aisle boring.
Righteous Felon grew from a childhood jerky-making obsession into a West Chester craft snack company known for whole-muscle beef, bold flavors, and an intentionally over-the-top cast of fictional “felons” and “contraband” stories wrapped around the real food.
A Chester County jerky hobby becomes a full-time Pennsylvania craft snack company.
Where It Began
A childhood interest in making jerky grows into a West Chester business.
The Real Story Started Long Before the “Cartel.”
Founder Brendan Cawley began experimenting with jerky when he was around eleven years old.
He kept making it through middle school and high school, then stepped away from the hobby during college and the early years of a corporate career.
Several years into that career, he returned to jerky-making with help from his brothers and close friends. The group began selling locally in the Philadelphia area, and Righteous Felon became a formal business in 2012.
What followed was an unusual combination: serious attention to beef and flavor, paired with a brand voice that treats every bag like evidence from a fictional snack-smuggling operation.
Brendan Cawley starts experimenting with homemade jerky at a young age.

The Rap Sheet Comes With a Wink
The Crime Story Is Branding. The Jerky Story Is Real.
Righteous Felon has one of the most elaborate fictional brand universes in the snack aisle.
The company writes about a “Jerky Cartel,” outlaw characters, smuggling operations, suspicious aliases, and flavors with names like Bourbon Franklin and Habanero Escobar.
Those stories are intentionally absurd brand humor—not literal history. The actual company story is the simpler and more useful one: friends from Chester County, a longtime interest in making jerky, a 2012 business launch, and steady growth from local sales into national distribution.
For Gift With a Story, both can coexist: we tell the real maker history accurately, then let Righteous Felon’s playful “contraband” personality do what it does best—make the product memorable.
The outlaw names are fiction. The Pennsylvania smokehouse and the beef inside the bag are not.
The useful way to read the Righteous Felon storyBehind the Bag
The Humor Is Loud. The Ingredient Philosophy Is Straightforward.
Righteous Felon builds its jerky around American-sourced protein, whole-muscle cuts, and small-batch smoking in Pennsylvania.
American Farms
The company says its proteins are sourced through partnerships with American farms.
Pasture-Raised Black Angus
Righteous Felon uses premium whole-muscle Black Angus beef for its traditional jerky line.
No Artificial Preservatives
The brand emphasizes recipes without artificial ingredients or preservatives, with many flavors also low in sugar and gluten-free.
Small-Batch in Pennsylvania
The jerky is smoked in small batches in Pennsylvania to create the dense, steak-like texture the brand is known for.
Selected for a Reason
Why We Chose Righteous Felon.
Our assortment already had chips, peanuts, pretzels, popcorn, candy, and cookies. What it did not have was jerky.
Righteous Felon fills that gap without feeling generic. It gives us Pennsylvania production, American-sourced beef, a true road-snack format, and enough flavor personality to make the jerky part of the gift instead of filler.
It is especially useful for the Collegiate Survival Parcel, American Road gifts, game-day boxes, care packages, and future barbecue or smokehouse collections.
And the brand’s mock-contraband language fits naturally with the playful side of Gift With a Story— especially Sugarfoot, speakeasy, and backroom-themed gifts— without requiring us to invent historical claims.
A road snack with enough flavor, Pennsylvania identity, and personality to earn a place in the story.
Why Righteous Felon belongs in the giftFrom the Smokehouse
Four Jerky Flavors Worth Starting With.
Righteous Felon offers a much larger lineup, but these four give Gift With a Story the clearest range of classic, barbecue, playful Americana, and heat.
The Classic
O.G. Hickory
Smoky · Savory · Traditional
The most straightforward introduction to the brand: a smoky, savory jerky that lets the beef and classic smokehouse character lead.
The Barbecue One
Bootleggin’ BBQ
Sweet BBQ · Pepper Heat · Smoky
A sweet barbecue profile backed by hot peppers, with a name that fits comfortably into the backroom-and-contraband side of the Gift With a Story world.
The Americana Flavor
Bourbon Franklin
Bourbon · Vanilla Bean · Savory-Sweet
A bourbon-and-vanilla-bean flavor with one of the brand’s most unmistakably American names—playful rather than historical, but very much at home in an Americana gift.
The Heat Seeker
Habanero Escobar
Habanero · Spicy · Bold
The choice for someone who wants the jerky to bring real heat instead of politely staying in the background.
Not Sure Where to Start?
Begin With O.G. Hickory.
The Jerky Before the Character
If this is their first Righteous Felon bag, start with the flavor that makes the clearest case for the smokehouse itself.
Choosing Their Bag

Bootleggin’ BBQThe Bourbon Person
They like a savory snack with a slightly sweeter, more unusual finish.
Bourbon FranklinThe Heat Seeker
They consider “spicy” a challenge rather than a warning.
Habanero EscobarBuild the Road Snack
Jerky Gives the Snack Box Some Weight.
Righteous Felon pairs especially well with the salty, crunchy, bottle-and-bag side of your assortment.
Jerky + Chips
Righteous Felon + Route 11

Jerky + Peanuts
Righteous Felon + Virginia Diner
Two protein-forward snacks create a more substantial care package or game-day box.
Jerky + Soda
Righteous Felon + Reading Soda Works
Smoky jerky and glass-bottle soda turn the box into a proper roadside snack stop.
A Modern Pennsylvania Road Snack
PAAmericana Does Not Have to Mean Antique.
Righteous Felon is a modern maker. Its real business story belongs to the twenty-first century, not Prohibition.
But jerky itself occupies a very familiar place in American road culture: truck stops, general stores, road trips, hunting bags, hiking packs, college care packages, and the glove compartment snack that survives the miles.
Righteous Felon updates that tradition with better sourcing, small-batch production, and branding that treats the whole category with considerably less seriousness.
That gives us a useful modern-Americana story: an old type of road snack made by a newer Pennsylvania company that knows exactly how much fun to have with it.
The “Righteous” Part Matters Too
The Brand Has Used Its Platform for More Than Jokes.
Behind the criminal-character branding, Righteous Felon has also supported causes that connect directly to the company name.
The company has publicly supported the Innocence Project, which works to exonerate people who were wrongfully convicted, and it has described offering second-chance employment opportunities to people returning to the workforce after incarceration.
Righteous Felon has also participated in the Conservation Alliance, which supports the protection of wild places in North America.
That contrast is part of what makes the brand work: the “felons” on the bags are jokes, while the company tries to make the “righteous” part tangible.
The bags play the outlaw. The company still wants the word “righteous” to mean something.
