Douglas Sweets
A Scottish family recipe, a two-year trip around the world, and a Vermont mother-daughter business built one buttery batch at a time.

From the Beginning to Today.
Debra’s mother, Joan Douglas, brings a love of traditional Scottish shortbread into the family kitchen.
Debra and her four children backpack through 45 countries over two years.
Daughter Hannah joins the company, and mother and daughter grow the bakery together.
A Story Worth Knowing.
A family shortbread recipe becomes a growing Vermont small business.
In December 2008, Debra Townsend left Vermont with her four teenagers to backpack around the world.
For the next two years, the family traveled on a shoestring budget through 45 countries. When they finally returned home, the children were heading toward university and Debra needed to figure out what came next.
Money was tight, so holiday gifts that year needed to be homemade. Debra baked shortbread from a family recipe—one of the foods she associated most strongly with comfort and home.
