Caramelized Biscuits · Belgium to North Carolina · Since 1932
Lotus Biscoff
The little caramelized cookie that found its place beside the coffee cup— and eventually traveled from a Belgian bakery to cafés, airplanes, and ovens in North Carolina.
Lotus Biscoff began in Belgium in 1932, when baker Jan Boone Sr. created a crisp caramelized biscuit from natural ingredients. By the 1950s, individually wrapped Lotus biscuits were being served with coffee in cafés and restaurants—a pairing that would ultimately become part of the Biscoff name itself.

Where It Began
Jan Boone Sr. creates a caramelized biscuit in Belgium and names it Lotus.
Before Biscoff, There Was Lotus.
The story begins in Belgium in 1932 with baker Jan Boone Sr.
Boone created a caramelized biscuit using natural ingredients and named it Lotus after the flower associated with purity.
The cookie had a crisp bite and a distinctive caramelized flavor— simple enough to sit beside a cup of coffee, but memorable enough to become the foundation of a family-owned bakery business.
More than ninety years later, Lotus Bakeries remains family-owned, and the original caramelized biscuit is still the product at the center of the Biscoff story.

Lotus is introduced to cafés and restaurants as a biscuit served with coffee.
Biscoff begins reaching U.S. consumers through airlines, helping build an American following.
The first Biscoff cookies made outside Belgium come off the line in Mebane, North Carolina.
The Cookie Beside the Coffee
The Pairing Became Part of the Name.
Biscoff did not become a coffee cookie by accident. The relationship was deliberately built into the brand.
In the 1950s, Lotus began individually wrapping its biscuits and introducing them to cafés and restaurants as something to serve alongside coffee.
The caramelized biscuit and roasted coffee proved to be natural companions. As the pairing spread, the cookie became increasingly associated with lattes, espresso, and the small ritual of something sweet beside the cup.
The name “Biscoff” eventually captured that relationship: a combination of “biscuit” and “coffee.”

The idea behind BiscoffWhat Makes a Biscoff
Caramelized Flavor, Crisp Texture, Simple Ingredients.
The cookie looks straightforward. The baking process is what gives it its recognizable character.
Natural Ingredients
Lotus emphasizes a recipe made from carefully selected natural ingredients without artificial colors or flavors.
Caramelization
The signature flavor develops through the company’s controlled baking and caramelization process.
A Distinctive Crunch
Biscoff is intentionally crisp rather than soft, giving the cookie enough structure to stand up beside coffee.
Made for the Cup
The caramelized sweetness was popularized as a complement to the roasted flavors of coffee.
Belgian Roots · American Ovens
NCThe Brand Is Belgian. Part of Its Production Is Now American.
Lotus Biscoff is not an American-origin company, and we do not present it as one. Its story begins in Belgium in 1932.
America became important to that story decades later. In the 1990s, many U.S. consumers first encountered Biscoff as an airline snack.
As the United States grew into the brand’s largest market, Lotus Bakeries opened a Biscoff manufacturing facility in Mebane, North Carolina.
On August 5, 2019, the first Biscoff cookies produced outside Belgium rolled off the line there. Today, the Mebane facility remains an important part of Lotus Biscoff’s U.S. production story.
Selected for a Reason
Why We Chose Lotus Biscoff.
This is one of the few products in our pantry where the pairing story is almost as famous as the cookie itself.
Biscoff gives a coffee-centered gift an immediate, recognizable companion. It does not need a complicated recipe card or elaborate serving instructions. Open the wrapper, pour the coffee, and the experience makes sense.
It also adds an international chapter to Gift With a Story: a Belgian family company whose cookie became part of American airline and coffee culture—and whose U.S. production now includes North Carolina.
Most importantly, we can tell that story accurately without pretending Biscoff began in America. The journey is what makes it interesting.
A Belgian biscuit, an American coffee break, and a story that crossed the Atlantic one cookie at a time.

From Café Biscuit to Global Brand
The Original Cookie Became a Flavor of Its Own.
Biscoff eventually grew beyond the biscuit beside the coffee cup.
Lotus expanded the familiar caramelized flavor into cookie butter, sandwich cookies, ice cream, chocolate, and desserts.
But that expansion only works because the original cookie is so recognizable. The crisp texture and caramelized flavor became a reference point that could be translated into entirely different products.
For our gifts, we return to the beginning: the original cookie, the coffee pairing, and the simple story that made everything else possible.
Before the spread, the ice cream, and the desserts, there was one crisp cookie beside a cup of coffee.
