The original Café du Monde coffee stand opened in the New Orleans French Market in 1862. Its menu was never built around endless choices. Instead, it became known for doing a few things remarkably well: dark-roasted coffee with chicory, café au lait, and square French-style doughnuts covered in powdered sugar.
For generations, visitors have gathered beneath its awning for a strong cup of coffee and a plate of warm beignets. It is a simple experience, but one closely connected to the flavors and character of New Orleans.

Why Chicory?
Café du Monde’s signature blend combines dark-roasted coffee with roasted chicory. Chicory comes from the root of the endive plant and is roasted and ground before being blended with the coffee.
The result is a bold, full-bodied cup with an earthy depth that sets it apart from an ordinary dark roast. It can be served black, but the traditional New Orleans preparation is café au lait—strong coffee and hot milk mixed in equal parts.
The Beignet Tradition
Coffee may fill the cup, but beignets complete the Café du Monde experience.
These light, square French-style doughnuts are fried until puffed and golden, then finished with a generous covering of powdered sugar.
