Standard Candy Company

Goo Goo Clusters

A Southern Original with a Sweet History

Standard Candy Company began with humble roots—just a few copper kettles, simple ingredients, and a commitment to quality that would carry the business forward for generations. It didn’t take long for the company to earn a reputation for dependable, well-crafted confections, but its true legacy would arrive just over a decade later.

In 1912, Standard Candy Company introduced what would become its most famous creation: the Goo Goo Cluster. At a time when most candies were single-note treats, this was something entirely different. The Goo Goo Cluster brought together roasted peanuts, rich caramel, soft marshmallow nougat, and a coating of milk chocolate—all in one satisfying bite. It is widely recognized as America’s first combination candy bar, and from the moment it hit the market, it stood apart.

But what makes Goo Goo Clusters special isn’t just what’s inside—it’s the story they carry. Born in Nashville, they quickly became a regional favorite and, over time, a symbol of Southern charm and craftsmanship. Generations have grown up with them, passing down not just the taste, but the memory of a simpler kind of indulgence—one that didn’t need reinvention to remain relevant.

There’s something about that era—the early 1900s into the Prohibition years—that pairs perfectly with a treat like this. While the country was busy outlawing spirits and shutting down saloons, places of gathering didn’t disappear—they evolved. Coffee counters, soda fountains, and backroom cafés became the new social hubs. And in those spaces, it wasn’t just about what you drank—it was about what you shared. A good piece of candy, something rich and satisfying, became its own kind of quiet indulgence.

Goo Goo Clusters fit that world perfectly. They didn’t need to be hidden or whispered about, but they still carried that sense of “something a little extra.” A treat you didn’t rush. A flavor you savored. Something that felt just indulgent enough to be worth the moment.
