From a Carriage Shop to a Pennsylvania Dutch Tradition

Bauman's Fruit Butters

Bauman’s began in 1892 when John W. Bauman purchased a cider press and installed it in his carriage-manufacturing shop. Before long, he was using a traditional family recipe to make apple butter for neighboring farmers, who knew it by its Pennsylvania German name, “lattwaerrick.”

As word spread, apple butter gradually replaced carriage making as the family business. More than a century later, Bauman’s continues to produce fruit butters, cider, and other Pennsylvania Dutch specialties in Sassamansville, Pennsylvania.
