Cafe du Monde

Cafe du monde

A French Quarter Classic with a Dry-Era Kind of Charm

Some things never need smuggling to feel forbidden. Café du Monde is one of them.

Since 1862, Café du Monde has been serving up one of New Orleans’ most iconic pairings: hot beignets and rich chicory coffee. Long before modern coffee shops and trendy cafés, this legendary French Market stand was already drawing crowds with simple pleasures done right—fresh coffee, warm fried dough, and a little powdered sugar flying through the air like confetti after midnight.

At Gift With a Story, we love products that carry more than flavor—they carry history, place, and a sense of occasion. That is exactly why we are proud to include Café du Monde coffee and beignet mix in select gift sets. These are not just pantry items. They are part of an experience that brings a little French Quarter magic, a little old-world comfort, and a whole lot of character to the table.

The Story Behind the Coffee

Café du Monde is famous not only for its beignets, but for its unmistakable coffee and chicory blend. If you have never had chicory coffee before, you are in for something special.

What is chicory coffee?

Chicory comes from the root of the chicory plant, which is roasted, ground, and blended with coffee to create a brew that is rich, deep, and smooth, with subtle earthy and nutty notes. This distinctive combination produces a flavor that is less sharp than traditional black coffee, offering a more rounded and comforting cup. The practice of mixing coffee with chicory became especially popular in New Orleans, where it evolved from a simple necessity into a signature regional taste, resulting in a bold, satisfying drink with a character all its own.

The tradition of blending coffee with chicory became especially well known in New Orleans. Over time, it became more than a substitute or necessity—it became a signature taste. The result is a bold, comforting cup with a character all its own.

Beignets

Light, pillowy, and buried under a glorious heap of powdered sugar, Café du Monde’s beignets are one of those rare treats that feel both elegant and wonderfully messy. They are rooted in French tradition, but in New Orleans they became something all their own—a beloved ritual, a local landmark, and a sweet companion to a hot cup of chicory coffee.

With the Café du Monde beignet mix, you can bring a bit of that tradition home. Fry them up fresh, dust them generously, and suddenly your kitchen feels a little less ordinary and a lot more like a corner table in the French Quarter.

Their coffee and beignet mix bring together history, regional charm, and timeless flavor, all wrapped in a sense of indulgence that feels right at home in our prohibition-inspired collections.

In a world of hidden speakeasies and whispered passwords, not every pleasure needed to be outlawed. Sometimes all it took was a hot cup of chicory coffee, a plate of powdered beignets, and a moment that felt just a little too good to be entirely respectable.
